Over this past weekend the Empire Awards took place, and one of the shows biggest winners was Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Not only did the film take home a number of awards, but breakout stars Daisy Ridley and John Boyega both did as well. Ridley and Boyega are no doubt pretty busy right now, as Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: Episode VIII is a number of weeks into filming. But after statements made at the Empire Awards, it seems like one of the young actors might be adding another tentpole franchise to their plate.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter and Variety, Daisy Ridley has confirmed that there have been “conversations” about her possibly taking the lead role in the upcoming reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise. Talk of the reboot has been going on for a while now, but it’s been steadily building over the last few weeks. And since the project doesn’t have a well known director or writer attached, locking down a lead like Ridley would be the way to go, considering how hard her name hit the public-eye following her performance in The Force Awakens. Ridley has even expressed that she’s total game for the project, saying “I’m waiting for someone to say ‘I want you, let’s do it.” She also added that it wouldn’t conflict with Episode VIII and that she’s looking to fill up her calendar with work.
As far as her as Lara Croft, sold. Back when The Force Awakens first hit theaters and the talk of this reboot started, I stated that Ridley would be a perfect choice to play a young Lara Croft and kick-off these new movies. It would make the movie(s) that much more intriguing, it would let us see Ridley take on another big character in another beloved franchise. While I love her as Rey, enough to say she’s one of my all-time favorite Star Wars characters, I’m just waiting to see what she does next. And although this kind of role might be deemed risky for an actress with so many options following her outing in Star Wars, there’s a solid chance these movies could do right what the Angelina Jolie left movie did wrong. And if this ends up being the case, I’m fully on-board with a Tomb Raider reboot starring Daisy Ridley.
What do you think of Daisy Ridley stepping out of the galaxy far, far away and jumping into he world of archaeological adventuring? Do you like the possible casting or would you rather see her do something else? The Tomb Raider reboot is slated for a 2017 release date and will be directed by The Wave director Roar Uthaug.
