Get ready to meet a Batman unlike any version of the character we’ve seen before on the big screen. He’s older, experienced, less-merciful, and skeptical over this Superman character. As shown in the most recent trailer, this Batman (played by Ben Affleck) can put a beating on his enemies that’ll leave them seriously injured and potentially disabled for the rest of their lives. He fights with so much anger and aggression, but where does this all come from?
There have been hints and nods throughout the marketing (along with many rumors) that Batman has suffered a great deal of tragedy in his past. The very first official trailer shows Bruce Wayne standing next to a damaged suit, with the words “Ha Ha Ha. Jokes on you Batman“. I believe that suit belonged to his fallen comrade Robin, but none of us will know for sure until the movie releases. Ben Affleck spoke in an interview with EW, and talk about a dark moment in his Batman-past that cost him the life of a close friend.
“He’s bitterly disappointed in the past that he’s lost this guy who fought by his side. That character’s death must have been devastating to him, and he’s suffered. We get the sense that he’s suffered a lot of devastating losses before this movie even starts.”
While so much as already happened in the city of Gotham in those 20 years under the protection of Batman, its not nearly enough for Bruce Wayne to finally hang up the cape and cowl. Batman v Superman will serve as a coming out of retirement party for the caped crusader. While he’ll certainly have his adventures with the Justice League, the city of Gotham will eventually call on The Batman to help defend their city once again.
Affleck teased a Batman standalone movie being in development at Warner Bros. Although he didn’t give an official confirmation that he’ll be directing, we’ll soon have an answer to that question.
“There’s definitely willingness and a will and a desire to make a Batman movie on the part of Warner Brothers. It’s in development, and right now I’m really focused on finishing Live By Night. That’s where my focus is, and I tend to be a one movie at a time guy. So, when I’m finished with this movie, I’ll then focus on my next movie and figure out what that will be.”
We’re about two weeks away until Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice finally arrives. Lets save the Batman solo-film speculation until afterwards. Besides I have a great feeling we’ll know something soon around say…. comic con.
