The upcoming Saban’s Power Rangers movie has officially begun production. The movie will be directed by Dean Israelite (Project Almanac), and stars Dacre Montgomery as Jason, the Red Ranger; RJ Cyler as Billy, the Blue Ranger; Naomi Scott as Kimberly, the Pink Ranger; singer Becky G as Trini, the Yellow Ranger; and Ludi Lin as Zack, the Black Ranger. Also recently confirmed is actress Elizabeth Banks (Hunger Games series) who will play the famous Rita Repulsa. To celebrate the start of production, Lionsgate has released an official synopsis for the movie.
Saban’s Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late.
If you’re an adult who watched the Power Rangers TV show as a kid, you probably figured this the synopsis would be something like the above. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of reception the first couple of marketing materials will receive (photos, trailers, etc). This film will likely be more focused towards a new generation of kids, so I’ll caution those looking to revisit that 90’s show you loved as a kid to temper expectations. That being said, I’m kind of hoping to see longtime Power Rangers actor Jason David Frank (Green Ranger, White Ranger) make a cameo, and show these kids who the O.G. of Power Rangers is.
Saban’s Power Rangers currently has a March 24, 2017 release date.
