Ronda Rousey Wants to Star as Samus in ‘Metroid’ Movie

Sooner or later a Metroid movie is going to happen. I think the video-game genre in Hollywood is bound to emerge this year with the success of Warcraft and Assassin’s Creed. When that happens, we’ll soon begin to see many major studios partnering with gaming companies to adapt their characters to the big screen. For Metroid, the property has been around for 30 years now spanning over 12 games, so its popularity among the gaming culture are of the highest.
For those who aren’t familiar, Metroid chronicles the missions of a female space-faring bounty hunter named Samus Aran, who protects the galaxy from space pirates and parasite-like creatures. The concept makes for a great sci-fi/action epic. While I don’t think Metroid will be getting the green-light instantly, should Warcraft and Assassin’s Creed become hits, I definitely think a movie will happen for reasons I’ve stated above. Of course, it doesn’t hurt when the video-game property is getting support from a big name in sports.
Former UFC Women’s champion Ronda Rousey has expressed her interest in playing Samus Aran in a future Metroid movie. Outside of the octagon ring, Rousey has slowly been building a career in Hollywood. In 2014, she had a supporting role in the forgettable Expendables 3, and last year she appeared in small roles in films like Furious 7 and Entourage. Rousey has also won the hearts of the geek culture by not shying away for her love of Pokemon, Dragonball Z, among other things. However, even those people can agree that her acting experience is very young and inexperienced. Yes, Rousey possess the physicality to do action sequences, however, a lead role like Samus Aran would require much more.
Even if a studio were to give the green light for a Metroid movie, it’ll be years until we see it hit the big screen. From development into pre-production alone could take a year, so in Rousey’s defense she could potentially develop acting skills for the role. Remember, back in August it was reported that Nintendo is looking to adapt their biggest properties into live-action films. Right now, everyone is waiting to see how Warcraft and Assassin’s Creed fare. As for Rousey, she’s expected to begin a couple projects soon, including starring alongside Mark Wahlberg in the action/thriller Mile 22 and sometime after on the remake to the 1989 film Roadhouse.
