I’m counting down the days until Idris Elba exits as Heimdall in the Thor franchise. I think the actor is too big for the role, and deserves to do more (i.e. Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique). Until then, I’m somewhat happy the writers for Thor: Ragnarok are finding ways to give Elba more to do.
In the first Thor movie, Elba was a non-factor. The second Thor movie saw him do a couple action sequences, and an increase in dialogue with Thor. The third movie will attempt to give Elba (as Heimdall) an even bigger role. However, their pitch doesn’t sound encouraging…
Latino Review is claims that Heimdall will get killed by Hela (possibly Cate Blanchett) during her fight with Thor. The fight is apparently violent as Hela puts a beating on Thor, and destroys his hammer. Later in the movie, a final showdown will see Hela and her army of the dead fight against Thor and his “good Valkyries from Valhalla and the souls of the righteous fallen, including Heimdall“.
Not sure how killing Heimdall early on increases his role, but at least he won’t stay dead, sort-of. Either way, I’m expecting this to be the final Thor movie, at least with both Chris Hemsworth and Idris Elba. The term Ragnarok refers to the ends of all things, so why not go out with a bang and have Heimdall come back for one final hurrah.
