Hearing that Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass would reunite for Jason Bourne was the best news for the spy genre in recent years. Then when I saw Damon’s performance in The Martian, it reminded me of how great of an actor he is. The combination of the two put Jason Bourne in my Top 5 Most Anticipated Films of the Year.
The first teaser for Jason Bourne was nothing short of awesome. It at times felt like I was watching Jason Bourne in Fight Club, which wouldn’t be a bad thing. Coming off that epic teaser, Damon sat down with EW and explained who that Jason Bourne was that we saw.
He’s living with the same things as he was before, and then he goes to find Julia Stiles’ character, who basically says, “Just because you remember everything, doesn’t mean you know everything.” So you find him in a place that’s dark and unresolved.
This is the completion of this journey that started in the Bourne Identity. It’s part of the first three [movies], it’s not a whole new chapter. It feels like the conclusion, even though we’re not saying it’s the conclusion, it feels like the conclusion of my identity journey. It goes deeper than Ultimatum, basically.
It seems like Damon is suggesting that Jason Bourne will give further closure to what we already know, by giving us more. Anything that’s a mystery regarding the Bourne character is always interesting, and Greengrass, as the director of the previous two films starring Damon, knows how to pace the story.
Damon also talks about some of the supporting cast and the roles they play. Alicia Vikander and Tommy Lee Jones will play important pieces in moving the Bourne story forward.
You have to do something great and new, and Alicia is our great and new. She plays a new character we’re introducing, and she’s a specialist in cyber. Instead of just the three arenas of warfare — air, land and sea — there’s now this fourth element: cyber. The implications of that are huge, and she’s representing that in the movie.
We also have Tommy Lee Jones in the movie, and he’s kind of representing the analog CIA in the way the old guard thinks. Those two go head to head quite a bit. Introducing those two new characters, I think, is probably one of the biggest trailblazing things we’ve done in this movie.
Part of my unofficial “Movie New Years Resolution” is finally giving Alicia Vikander the credit she deserves. She’s the real deal, and I cannot wait to see her in this role. I also love how Jason Bourne will introduce “cyber warfare”, which has become a growing thing since the turn of the century. Lastly, I can’t wait to see Jones’ performance as a CIA head. I love it when movies get veteran talents to play these high ranking officials in secretive agencies (i.e Robert Redford in Captain America: The Winter Soldier).
Jason Bourne will be a movie to look forward to this summer. The movie releases on July 29th and also stars Vincent Cassel and Riz Ahmed. Check out the full interview from EW.
