To quote Peter Quill, who would’ve thought seeing a bunch of “losers” work together would be so much fun? Many will agree, the best part about Guardians of the Galaxy was the Guardians of the Galaxy. The movie did a great job exploring the relationships between Star Lord, Drax, Gamora, Rocket, and Groot, as they struggled to get along and trust each other. Director James Gunn injected so much fun and heart into these characters, that when moments like “We Are Groot” happened, we legitimately felt sadness. But I’m not here to review Guardians of the Galaxy. I’m here to talk about how the best part about that movie, just might have gotten even better.
All the members from Guardians of the Galaxy will be returning for Vol 2. in 2017. However according to a new rumor, the five member team could be expanding its roster to as many as eight members.
The rumor (via. Geek.com) says that Yondu, Nebula, and a new character named Mantis will all become members of the G.O.T.G. Nothing as far as how or why they decide to come aboard is revealed, which is perfectly fine by me.
I really loved the Yondu character (played by Michael Rooker). His relationship with Peter was very interesting and somewhat to fun to watch. Yondu has a long history working with Peter, so the two potentially teaming up makes sense. I’m curious to see where the sequel picks up between the two considering how Peter double-crossed Yondu after their deal for the orb.
The name Nebula (played by Karen Gillan) is the biggest surprise to me. I doubt her recruitment means that she’s turned completely good, but I’m betting something big happens in Vol. 2 that forces her to join sides with the good guys. Also, with Ronan the Accuser dead, and her betrayal to her father Thanos, she might not have many allies or sympathizers outside of her sister Gamora. As for Mantis, any clues to her circumstances in joining the team remains to be seen. The reports from Geek.com state her backstory “ties into the Celestials, Kree cults, and the Guardians themselves.” If you’ve seen the first movie, you’ll know the Kree race were mentioned a few times and played a key part in several character motives.
Overall, this rumor doesn’t surprise me too much. I expect many bad things to happen in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Its one of the films leading up to Avengers: Infinity War Part One, which means Thanos will somehow get closer to gathering the infinity stones. Lets not forget that one of the stones is currently on Xandar, the home of the Nova Corps. Also, I’m sure The Collector (played by Benicio Del Toro) isn’t too pleased with how the exchange with the Guardians turned out in the first movie, so he’ll be seeking some sort-of revenge.
More additions to the Guardians of the Galaxy squad is almost necessary if the threat becomes bigger. I’m excited to see what kind of roles Yondu, Nebula, and Mantis could have as Guardians going forward. Can you see any of those three characters becoming new members of the Guardians of the Galaxy? Give us your speculations below.
