Last night’s DC Special “DC Films Presents the Dawn of the Justice League” not only featured the first official trailer for Suicide Squad and a new look at Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but also the very first bit of footage at Patty Jenkins’ highly anticipated Wonder Woman.
Okay, I’ll be honest, it looks pretty sweet. Not only does it clearly set the tone and give us just a slight tease into the type of origin story we’ll get, but it’s just beautiful to look at. It was officially revealed that the film will be set in the WWI era and this footage easily captures that time period. Jenkins and her cinematographer Matthew Jensen look like they are bringing a very strong vision to movie that is very, very long overdue. What I got most from the video, however, is that although origin stories have become a bit tiresome as of late, they look to be doing their due diligence with the greatest female comic book character of all-time. But most of all, I really like what I’m hearing so far. The descriptions, the excitement, the passion, it now puts some great credibility behind it.
With her being introduced in Batman v Superman in just a few months, they could’ve easily followed the narrative and just picked up her story following those events, instead they’re going back in time and making sure it’s done right. A great comparison could be to Marvel’s Captain America. I couldn’t love more the way they described her in the video, which draws very high comparisons to Cap. As Cap is Marvel’s boy scout, Wonder Woman is DC’s girl scout. She’s caring, kind, and loving, but she will kick your teeth in if need be. And from the footage, it looks like we’ll be getting exactly that. We’ll be seeing her become that strong, inspiring, and leading Amazonian warrior and future Justice League member, one that will beating the pulp out on Nazi’s.

Starring Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Robin Wright, Connie Nielsen, Danny Huston, David Thewlis, Ewen Bremner, Saïd Taghmaoui, Elena Anaya, and Lucy Davis, Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman opens in theaters June 23rd, 2017.
