I’m not sure if producer Len Wiseman is trying to milk every last ounce from this franchise, or if he’s trying to remake Looper. The producer/director has plans for making a sixth Die Hard film that will serve as a prequel/sequel for the John McClane character. Initial reports mentioned that Bruce Willis would appear in a cameo role as John McClane, and another actor would play a younger version of him. Now its being reported (/Film) that Willis will have a bigger role than a cameo, with flashbacks between present and the past John McClane. After seeing the studio attempt to transition the franchise with Jai Courtney (as McClane’s son), it was clear to me these guys have no idea what to do with the franchise. Now their idea is to stretch out the best part about Die Hard, which is John McClane and further exploring his life leading up to the first film.
… It’s a delicate balance of giving you a sense of what started McClane, because McClane when he comes into Die Hard 1 has a lot of emotional baggage, baggage in general more so than a lot of our other action characters in the sense that he’s already divorced. He’s got an incredible chip on his shoulder. He’s bitter. His captain hates him, doesn’t want him back in New York. What caused all that? Why was he already that guy?”
Not only does Wisemen want to explore McClane prior to Die Hard, but he also wants to tell the story of what happened between him and Holly McClane.
“I also just really wondered what was the relationship,” Wiseman said. “When did he first meet Holly? It’s actually the love story that has not been told.”
No, No, No, No, No. I don’t want the next and possibly last Die Hard film for Bruce Willis to be a love story. I am open to the idea of Bonnie Bedelia returning as Holly, and seeing how much her relationship with John has changed. However, I don’t need to know how they ended up where they were in the first film. Also, how much story does Wiseman expect to cook up from an average cop? Don’t change how audiences view John McClane as character in the first film. We don’t need every single detail to be explained. The opportunity for that has passed.
Whether I like it or not, this is most likely happening. Fortunately, I really liked Live Free or Die Hard which was directed by Wiseman. So there’s hope that even the most ridiculous idea could turn out decent. What the hell, why not make this a family affair and bring back Marry Winstead as Lucy McClane and Jai Courtney as John McClane Jr. While your at it Wiseman, bring back Justin Long as the son-in-law, because I really liked his character. Go big or go home. My only request is that Bruce Willis’ John McClane character is given a heroic death. Do that and we’ll call it a day.
I’ll have more updates to complain about regarding Die Hard 6/Die Hard: Year One when they become available.
