Steven Spielberg’s ‘Ready Player One’ Finds Its Villain in Ben Mendelsohn

Ben Mendelsohn

Ready Player One became the most anticipated book-to-film adaptation when Steven Spielberg signed on to direct. This sci-fi/adventure focuses on a poor orphan named Wade, who stumbles onto the biggest treasure hunt of all-time in a virtual world known as Oasis. The objective of the hunt is to find a number of Easter eggs through pop cultural reference clues, and in the end you’ll be granted riches and ownership of the virtual program.

Right now, the film is filling out its cast, while the script is getting its final touches. So far just one casting announcement has been made, with actress Olivia Cooke in the female lead role. Cooke will play a Canadian blogger who goes by the name Art3mis in the virtual world. She’s a competitor and love interest to Wade. Although she’s the only official cast member, reports are now mentioning a second actor in Ben Mendelsohn.

The Hollywood Reporter goes into length about the potential casting, but doesn’t confirm which role Mendelsohn will play. Their description of the reported role includes “an executive for an Internet corporation that has designs on Oasis”. After some researching, its likely the role will be a character named Nolan Sorrento, who in the book is a villain with a similar description.

An actor such as Ben Mendelsohn could do great in this role. In 2015, the actor had arguably his best year, starring in films like Slow West and Mississippi Grind. He’s currently shooting an unknown role in Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. I’ve become a fan of Mendelsohn over the last couple of years, and this potential role in Ready Player One would only make more audiences aware of his acting talent.

Ready Player One is expected to begin shooting in the next couple months for a December 15, 2017 release date.
