Rumor Central: Jet Li & Tony Jaa Sign on for ‘xXx: The Return of Xander Cage’

Jet Li & Tony Jaa

The wait is almost over, as the cameras are set to start rolling for the third xXx movie (unofficially titled xXx: The Return of Xander Cage). Details on the movie have so far been kept under wraps, and that’s okay because to me having Vin Diesel and Samuel L. Jackson back (as Xander Cage and Augustus Gibbons) is what’s important to getting this franchise back on track. However, a new rumor in the casting department could make audiences take this movie serious, as Jet Li and Tony Jaa are rumored to star in the movie.

Should this rumor be true, then it gives the long delayed xXx film a major boost. I’ve been a big Jet Li fan since Fist of Legend, and I’ve been waiting for him to comeback to the blockbuster mainstream since the first Expendables film over five years ago. I’ve also grown more aware in recent years of Tony Jaa and his martial arts superstar international status. Jaa made his mainstream debut in last year’s Furious 7 (alongside Diesel), but longtime fans know him for his Ong Bak films. There’s no word on what kind of role these two will play, but I’m hopeful the filmmakers have something awesome in mind.

There’s quite a few questions I have going into this movie. The first is will they largely ignore the failed sequel, State of the Union which starred Ice Cube. Those who’ve seen the movie will remember that Xander Cage’s death was mentioned, but never shown onscreen. Should they decide to acknowledge that sequel, how would they explain Xander Cage coming back to life, especially considering that terrible short film “The Death of Xander Cage“? I’m sure they’ll find a way to fix everything.

Shooting for the upcoming xXx movie will take place in the Philippines. D.J. Caruso (Eagle Eye) is set to direct the film, with Diesel producing. No official release date has been announced.
