Paul Feig’s ‘Ghostbusters’ Will Have the Heroines Facing Villains from New York’s Past

Paul Feig’s soft reboot/sequel Ghostbusters  is coming and coming fast. More and more looks have started to hit the web over the last few weeks, and this post is a wrap up of a number of them. The two new images and set of character posters showcase Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Melissa McCarthy;Kristen Wiig;Kate McKinnon;Leslie JonesJones as the title heroes ready to wreck in their ghost-busting gear; you can check all that out below. And while I’ll admit that I do like the look of each of them, the more interesting stuff comes from the story details that were released in an Entertainment Weekly article.

According to EW, these ghostbusters will be facing more than just your normal spirits, they’ll be going up against some of the hardest criminals of New York’s history: “Pilgrims, old-timey sailors, Revolutionary War spirits, and even a couple of zoot-suited gangsters” will be antagonizing our heroines in Feig’s action comedy. This is a very interesting twist on the Ghostbusters mythology, and it actually gets me a bit more excited than I have been for the film. We just won’t be seeing our everyday ghosts, but possibly some historical figures from New York’s past, which could be very cool.

While I enjoyed Melissa McCarthy in the beginning, her comedy is just getting a bit old for me. it seems to be the same thing over-and-over again, just in different situations. I’m still looking forward to a new female-led Ghostbusters, don’t get me wrong, but what really has me excited for it is Kristen Wiig and SNL cast members Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. I’m a gigantic fan of them, especially McKinnon. Both of their chops of SNL are always some of the biggest highlights of the show, and to see them making a jump to the big screen with a property like this, it has me excited and very interested in checking it out.

If you’re looking for more information on each of the character and who they are, here’s a little breakdown thanks to Collider:

  • Kristen Wiig plays Erin Gilbert, a particle physicist, academic firebrand, spectral warrior.
  • Melissa McCarthy is Abby Yates, a paranormal researcher, supernatural scientist, and entity trapper.
  • Kate McKinnon is Jillian Holtzmann, a nuclear engineer, munitions expert, and proton wrangler.
  • Leslie Jones is Patty Tolan, a ghost tracker, municipal historian, and metaphysical commando.

Like I said above, everything here looks pretty damn good. The ladies look pretty awesome all geared up and I like what I’m hearing so far about the story. But keep in mind, they are just images and details. Once the first trailer is released, hopefully we all still feel the same way.

Ghostbusters hits theaters on July 15th, 2016. Directed by Paul Feig starring Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, Chris Hemsworth, Andy Garcia, Michael Kenneth Williams, and Matt Walsh, with special appearances by Bill Murray, Sigourney Weaver, Ernie Hudson, and Dan Aykroyd.
