Before I discuss Hayden Christensen almost appearing in Star: Wars The Force Awakens, there’s something I have to confess. Okay, here we go.
Most people’s favorite Star Wars movie is one from the original trilogy, but not mines. Revenge of the Sith is my favorite Star Wars film, and its not because I think its the best, but because of the connection my childhood and teenage years has with the prequels. After Attack of the Clones, I spent the next three years eagerly waiting for ROTS, and after watching it in theaters my fourteen year old mind was blown away. Again, I’m not saying Revenge of the Sith is great, but its a film I can watch countless times.
I just felt like getting that off my chest to all of our readers.
Okay so back to present day, and Hayden Christensen almost appearing in this newest film. At first, I can understand most people’s frustration with including some part of the prequels with these new films. However, once you learn about their approach to including Christensen as Anakin and see the art work, its not such a bad idea.
Here’s Iain McCaig, an artist who drew the concept below and is featured in the book The Art of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
“If we see Anakin Skywalker, because he does flow back and forth between Darth Vader and Anakin, let’s see him as a character with a dark and light side,” McCaig reasoned. “The reason Luke is this whole new entity is because he was the first to acknowledge his own dark side — that it was not separate from him.”
The idea of Anakin Skywalker present as this version of a force ghost is very interesting. We’ve never seen the dark side of a force ghost before, and although its Hayden Christensen in the role, its still presenting something new in Star Wars. Also, consider how much of an improvement we could see from Christensen’s limited performance in the hands of a J.J. Abrams or a Rian Johnson. Again, this would be a small role, likely a cameo, so the odds of Christensen giving a serviceable performance is great.
I’m obviously talking as if I recognize how bad of an actor Christensen is, and for the most part he is…
The fact is Abrams and company came very close to featuring Christensen in The Force Awakens. They ultimately decided not to for unknown reasons. Rumors have been swirling about a possible appearance from him in either Episode VIII or Rogue One. Honestly, put him in both. Have the character be redeemed through our eyes, which had to suffer from all the wooden performances in the prequels. Considering all the talk of Anakin Skywalker, its only a matter of time until we see him return in the series.
Would you be open to Hayden Christensen returning in Episode VIII or Rogue One?
