Weekend Report: ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Crushes Box Office Records (UPDATED)

I was originally going to wait until the official numbers were announced, but I have to talk about these opening weekend estimations for Star Wars The Force Awakens. We all knew the movie would make tons of money, but these numbers are far more impressive.

The Force Awakens currently sits around $528 million worldwide (according to The Hollywood Reporter). If these numbers stand, and they likely will if not rise, that means it’ll be the highest grossing film for a worldwide opening weekend ever.

What’s even more impressive is the fact that The Force Awakens has yet to open in China, which is the biggest international market, and one that’s known for saving once failing blockbusters with its massive audience alone. That means The Force Awakens has grossed over $500 million not including one of the top two markets of the world. For comparison, the former champ Jurassic World had a worldwide opening weekend of $524.9 million, which included opening in China.

As for the U.S. numbers, The Force Awakens currently sits around a $248 million estimation (and counting). This number also overtakes Jurassic World ($208 million) for biggest U.S. box office weekend opening ever.

These numbers will only rise as we get closer to an accurate count, but you can bet Disney is more than pleased with their investment. Remember this is just the opening weekend, and The Force Awakens will have legs going into the new year. I’ve already seen the movie twice and that number is expected to triple before the movie leaves theaters. The force has indeed awakened from its decade long sleep, and looks ready to go for years to come.

Update: Universal Pictures & Jurassic World producers have congratulated Lucasfilm and company for their new record. Marvel previously did something like this when JW beat their record. Great stuff!
