Paramount Pictures has finally released the first teaser trailer for their upcoming sci-fi adventure Star Trek Beyond. As franchise kick-starter J.J. Abrams stepped away to direct that little space opera Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Fast & Furious veteran Justin Lin stepped in to take it over. Although Lin feels like a bit of an odd choice for a Star Trek movie, he seems to be exactly what Paramount wanted, someone who can bring the action, which is extremely clear in the first trailer.
Anchored by a script from Simon Pegg and Doung Jung, Beyond finds the crew of the Enterprise stranded on an alien planet following the destruction of their beloved cruiser. The teaser is a stunt highlight reel – which Lin is well-known for – now you just need to decided if that’s what you want from a Star Trek movie:
Let me start off by saying that I have become a huge fan of this rebooted franchise, mainly due to J.J. Abrams and what he brought (which is why he’s perfect for Star Wars). Although he is no longer in the chair to fit this franchise to his bidding, I am still very much looking forward to what a new director can bring to a really well modern-day take on Star Trek.
I’ll be the first to admit that I was slightly questioning the move to bring in a guy like Lin to oversee this movie and possibly future Star Trek‘s. It’s nothing against him at all, I mean just look at his work with Fast & Furious. But at the same time, that’s exactly it, Fast & Furious and Star Trek are stars apart. Even so, of course I’m going to give it a shot because I have no reason not to. So Beyond trucked on with great moves, from including Simon Pegg in the writing process to bringing on Idris Elba as the villain. How can you not get excited?
When this trailer dropped early yesterday, I jumped at the earliest possible moment to watch it. Like I said earlier, I’ve really enjoyed the most recent Star Trek‘s. But – it hurts to say this – I’m not feeling the trailer. Yeah, of course the action looks pretty damn awesome and the different kind of humor is cool, I guess. But it just didn’t feel like Star Trek to me. Star Trek is about adventure and discovering other species and worlds, this just feels like another space action blockbuster. There is no real distinct Star Trek feel to it.
Now, it is just a teaser trailer and anything can happen from here on out. The next trailer could be EXACTLY what I’m looking for for a Star Trek film titled Star Trek Beyond. But as for this one, it unfortunately just didn’t do it for me. Am I a little nervous? Definitely, I loved the direction this franchise was taking with Abrams leading it. Still, I’m still very much looking forward to what Lin can bring to this franchise. Hopefully it doesn’t end up as just another summer blockbuster.
Star Trek Beyond lands on July 22nd, 2016. Directed by Justin Lin starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, John Cho, Sofia Boutella, and Idris Elba.
