I recently re-watched Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2, and it just might be the best two-part film ever. Uma Thurman (along with Tarantino) created such a badass character in Beatrix Kiddo a.k.a. The Bride. She was everything that defines a female action star and someone we all rooted for. By the end of volume two I was satisfied with a complete story.
Then in 2009 someone asked Tarantino about the possibility of returning for a third film, and his answer made us excited for more Kill Bill. I don’t have the exact quote, but it was somewhere along the lines of Tarantino having a story involving the daughter of Vermita Green (played by Vivica A. Fox) seeking out Beatrix for revenge. Those of you who’ve seen Kill Bill Vol. 1 knows the little girl walked into the kitchen and saw her dead mother’s body with Beatrix standing over it. Beatrix says to the little girl, “when you grow up. If you still feel raw about it, I’ll be waiting“.
For the most part, if that story line were to be explored by Tarantino, then the themes of “revenge” and “family tragedy” would continue from the first two films. Its a story that Tarantino wants to tell, but time, along with other factors play a hand. Five years later (today), Tarantino talked again about the possibility of Kill Bill Vol. 3. In his interview with What the Flick!?, the director says “There’s definitely is a possibility. Stop short of seeing a probability”. Remember that Tarantino has his mind set towards doing novels and plays in the near future, but is still tempted by the potential of revisiting Beatrix. His whole mindset is giving the character time to breathe with her daughter, and to give everyone time to grow. “I put the character of Beatrix Kiddo through a lot, and so I wanted her to have this much time for peace. The whole idea [behind waiting so long between films] was everybody would be as old as they are,” Tarantino says.
I give the possibility of Kill Bill Vol. 3 happening a 65 percent chance. The story would allow for an older Uma Thurman as Beatrix to potentially take a backseat, as the story would focus on the little girl, who’s now grown up and seeking revenge for her mother’s murder. The role would be favorable for Thurman, who probably doesn’t want to revisit all the physicality that was required in the first two films. Plus she would be working with Tarantino again, which is never a bad thing. The main concern I have is if Tarantino would even want to commit one of his last two films to doing another Kill Bill. The director has often repeated that he will only make 10 films. The Hateful Eight is currently the director’s eighth film.
For me, the most interesting thing about a Vol. 3 is seeing how Vermita’s daughter handles learning the truth behind the murder of her mother. Will she still seek revenge? Will she change her mind and become a student of Beatrix? I know a writer like Tarantino would cook up something nice. I just wonder if he’ll change the title to something like ‘Kill the Bride‘.
Do you want a Kill Bill Vol. 3 to happen? How does the story so far sound?
