‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ Teaser Trailer: That Is Definitely Bigger Than the Last One

FINALLY. 20th Century Fox has released the teaser trailer for the long-awaited Independence Day sequel, Independence Day: Resurgence. Roland Emmerich – who directed the original – returns to the chair to helm the sequel. Resurgence sees Earth as they’ve used all the leftover alien technology from the original invasion to upgrade and install a space defense program, which is put to the test when the real alien invasion arrives twenty years after the original event.

Check out the awesome piece of nostalgia below:

Glorious, just glorious! From the very beginning, it’s pretty clear that this is very much an Independence Day movie, and one made for today’s audience. As I said above, the nostalgia factor is completely in play and it works perfectly. But it also has a pretty great blend of modern day-ness, which it should. While the original was a fun and entertaining take on an alien invasion, the trailer gives off the vibe that the sequel could be a bit darker and take itself much more serious. For me, it’s the necessary step I always thought an Independence Day sequel should take, and I’m really happy with the way it ended up.

One thing that can’t go without talking about is the cinematography. Say what you will about Emmerich’s films, but they are always visually beautiful, and this is definitely no exception. From the badass looking new tech Earth has created, to the massive arsenal the aliens are bringing with them this time around, it should definitely end up as a spectacle on the big screen.

Although Will Smith is not returning (blastfamy!), I just can’t help but get super giddy about what I’m seeing. Independence Day is one of the movies I can watch of repeat (especially 4th of July weekend) and never get tired of it. And yes, the trailer didn’t give any indication that it will feature the humor that makes the original so enjoyable, but who cares. Jeff freaking Goldblum is back and in a space suit, Bill Pullman has a sick beard, Judd Hirsch is giving us that classic ‘stare up into the sky’ look, and how about the speech layover? How can you not be excited? I’m all in.

We always knew they were coming back. After Independence Day redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet.  But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women  can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.

Independence Day: Resurgence slams into theaters June 24th, 2016. Directed by Roland Emmerich starring Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox, William Fichtner, Joey King, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Sela Ward.
