A couple months ago rumors surfaced about Marvel pursuing Ryan Coogler to direct the upcoming ‘Black Panther‘. The reports (via. Heroic Hollywood) mentioned Coogler as a prime candidate for the gig. At the time, the director’s only major directing credit was the critically acclaimed real life drama ‘Fruitvale Station‘, but the buzz for his sophomore effort ‘Creed‘ was building.
Now that ‘Creed‘ has released, winning over critics and fans, the talks between Marvel and Coogler are happening again. No official deal has been made (via. Birth.Movies.Death), but knowing Marvel they probably have their guy by now, Coogler or not.
I’ve been lobbying for Coogler for ‘Black Panther‘ since I first heard about this rumor. The director has exceptional skills for character focus and storytelling, which is exactly what Kevin Feige has in mind for the Marvel character. Coogler has often expressed interest in working on a big-budget blockbuster project. Hopefully Marvel wastes no time in locking down this director, as Warner Bros reportedly has their eye on him as well for their announced ‘Cyborg‘ DC movie.
