The first pair of images of Shane Black’s upcoming The Nice Guys have been released by Warner Bros. The film stars Ryan Gosling as a private detective and Russell Crowe as the hired muscle. According to Collider, the two have to “team up to solve the case of a missing girl and the seemingly unrelated death of a porn star — an investigation that leads them to uncover far-reaching conspiracy of corruption.” Sounds like some pretty interesting stuff, right?
People Magazine has released the first looks at the film, as well as some quotes from the interview they had with director Shane Black. Check it all out below:
While sitting down with People, Black described the tone of the film, while also praising the performances of his two stars:
“Whether this thing is a comedy with action or a thriller with jokes, one thing that’s very clear is these two are extremely funny. People will enjoy seeing the two of them.”
“It is an R-rated film and it’s a caper…It’s a little fast, a little funny and a little rough in places, kind of coarse. These guys are working-class dudes, they’re not really sophisticated private detectives, so it’s a chance to do the kind of thriller I don’t see too much of anymore.”
Black even went on to say that The Nice Guys almost serves as a “spiritual sequel” to his directorial debut, the 2005 noir thriller Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Now I’ve never seen Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, but seeing Black’s most recent work and a film with this kind of potential, I’m really looking forward to going back and checking out that film.
The Nice Guys hits theaters May 20, 2016. Directed by Shane Black starring Russell Crowe, Ryan Gosling, Matt Bomer, Ty Simpkins, and Kim Basinger.
