Disney has (finally) released the first trailer for their upcoming and highly, highly anticipated Marvel Studios comic book movie Captain America: Civil War. Directed by Captain America: The Winter Soldier helmers Joe and Anthony Russo, Civil War is the first film in Phase Three of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe and picks up after the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron as Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers/Captain America is leading the New Avengers. Following another “international incident” involving the team that results in destruction, the government and former Avenger Tony Stark feel their is a need to oversee what the team is doing, eventually leading to split sides of heroes, Team Captain America vs. Team Iron Man.
As this film has been pushing forward, many have been wondering just how much it would be a Captain America movie even though it feels like an Avengers movie with all the characters. But from this teaser trailer – yes, it’s a teaser trailer – it’s very clear that this is still very much a Captain America movie. The story does find Cap & Stark at odds, yes, but the trailer lets us know that it’s mostly from Cap’s perspective, which definitely makes it that much more interesting.
Watch the epic first trailer below, as we get some truly amazing shots of Captain America, Anthony Mackie’s Falcon, Sebastian Stan’s Bucky, Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther and the money shot, a pure geek out moment of Cap and Bucky taking on Iron Man.
It’s everything and more that I wanted. Civil War will more than likely end up as my most anticipated film of 2016 and its first trailer did not disappoint. It’s hard to believe superheroes taking on superheroes, but the trailer does a remarkable job of making it all completely realistic. There are SO many thing I just love from there trailer, clearly to many to talk about. As a huge fan of the Ed Brubaker Captain America comics, it’s very exciting to see these kind of moments with Cap and Bucky, as he begins to come back to reality. Not only that, but the very strong friendship built between Rogers and Sam Wilson, with Falcon looking like he’s taking on a major role this time around. But obviously the big moments are the first looks at Boseman’s Black Panther – which is easily one of the most exciting things going for Civil War – at that incredibly epic looking fight between Cap, Bucky and Iron Man at the end of the trailer. I watched the trailer nearly a dozen times just because of that moment and the weight it had, that is something I cannot wait to see play out on the big screen. How can you not love that line: “…but he is my friend.” “So was I.”
Here’s the official synopsis followed by the first set of posters:
