Even the worse things that have happened to Fox’s ‘Gambit‘ movie might turn out to be the best. To recap, the ‘Gambit‘ movie has gone through script re-writes as a result of production budget changes, while several big name directors have reportedly passed on the opportunity to direct. Then the one director who was attached at one point (Rupert Wyatt) ultimately left.
Through all the “development hell“, the ‘Gambit‘ movie is still standing and is on track to begin production early next year. Recently there have been rumors that Fox has finally found a director in Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow). All due respect to Rupert Wyatt, but I think Liman is the more talented and proven director. And although Fox has yet to confirm this rumor, there’s a great chance its real.
Here’s a quote from producer Simon Kinberg on ‘Gambit’ progress (prior to the Doug Liman rumor):
…we have a director in and I don’t know if I’m allowed to say who it is yet because his deal isn’t done, but it’s somebody we’re excited about, and somebody I adore, and hopefully we can make an announcement soon about that. But we’ve been spending a lot of time together—Channing, [Reid Carolin, Tatum’s producing partner], [screenwriter Joshua Zetumer], the director, and myself—just working on the script, and we hope to start shooting next spring.
If the director that Kinberg is talking about is indeed Doug Liman, then its a huge win for Fox. I been waiting to see Liman direct a comic book movie, especially after seeing what he’s done in the action genre.
Being a producer/writer on all things Fox/Marvel, Kinberg went on to compare the tone of ‘Deadpool‘ and ‘Gambit‘ to the usual X-Men movies. As you may know, ‘Deadpool‘ (starring Ryan Reynolds) will be Fox’s first rated-R comic book film since ‘Blade: Trinity‘ (which also starred Reynolds).
“I mean Deadpool obviously has a very different, almost antithetical tone to the mainline X-Men movies,” says Kinberg. “The X-Men movies are dramatic and almost operatic, where as Deadpool is irreverent and hysterical and sort of a dirty R-rated comedy in many ways. And Gambit will have its own different flavor and tone to it, will be more of like a heist movie and a sexy thriller in a way.”
Kinberg’s description of ‘Gambit’ and its tone is fitting when considering the character and its star Channing Tatum. Gambit is a standout member of the X-Men, and has quite a dark origin story that Kinberg and company intend on exploring. This is exciting news for those looking forward to this movie.
‘Gambit‘ starring Channing Tatum is very much happening despite its problems, and hopefully a good movie will be delivered come October 7, 2016.
