James Cameron Focuses on ‘Avatar’ Sequels, Abandons Long Delayed ‘Battle Angel’

Bad news for anyone still waiting for James Cameron’s long delayed action/thriller Battle Angel. According to sufficient reports from The Hollywood Reporter, Cameron has decided he won’t be able commit to the project as director. Instead, Cameron has handpicked Robert Rodriguez (Sin City) to take over as director, while he will remain on board as co-producer.

Here’s a quote from Cameron, who remains enthusiastic about the project moving forward.

“Robert and I have been looking for a film to do together for years, so I was pumped when he said he wanted to do Battle Angel,” stated Cameron. “He’s very collaborative and we’re already like two kids building a go-kart, just having fun riffing creatively and technically. This project is near and dear to me, and there’s nobody I trust more than Robert, with his technical virtuosity and rebel style, to take over the directing reins. We’re looking forward to learning a lot from each other while we make a kick-ass epic.”

This comes as a bit of a surprise considering Battle Angel co-producer Jon Landau’s previous comments stating this project being the next film for Cameron to direct. Fans have been long awaiting Cameron to direct, as they view him as the perfect fit given his previous work. Battle Angel is an adaptation from Yukito Kishiro. The story takes place in the 26th century and focuses on amnesiac female cyborg who is rescued from a scrapyard by a doctor, rebuilt, and begins hunting down dangerous criminals. Considering a guy like Cameron who’s done great things with action flicks in futuristic settings, and what he’s done with female action leads, its not difficult to see why he’s such a great fit.

As for Robert Rodriguez, he’s had some success in action films that are more grittier and violent. The fact that James Cameron hand picked him is encouraging to say the least. I’m actually a fan of Rodriguez’s work, so I’ll buy this choice. Still, from Cameron to Rodriguez is a huge difference. Hopefully this will work out for the best.

How do you feel about Robert Rodriguez taking James Cameron’s place for Battle Angel? Would you rather see an Avatar 2 or Battle Angel from Cameron?
