Martin Scorsese/Robert DeNiro Reuniting Next Year for ‘The Irishman’

Its been 20 years since the last Scorsese/De Niro collaboration in Casino. Before that, seven films spanning over three decades. Together these two have unquestionably brought us some of the greatest films of all time, and possibly one or two of your favorites.

Its been almost five years since news that Scorsese and De Niro were collaborating once again. The project, a 70’s mafia drama set in New York City called The Irishman.

The Irishman is based on a book called ‘I Heard You Paint Houses‘. Its the story of Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran who confessed in the murders of Teamster leader Jimmy Hoffa and Joe Gallo a.k.a. Crazy Joe. According to a very confident De Niro, the film will also star legends Al Pacino and retired actor Joe Pesci.

As exciting as this news is for Scorsese fans, the project has been delayed for years. Scorsese has been a very busy man, with his frequent collaborations with Leonardo DiCaprio. Also consider his delayed projects waiting on the horizon. Films like a Frank Sinatra biopic, Mike Tyson biopic, and his recently announced sixth collaboration with DiCaprio in the adaptation of Devil in the White City.

All that being said, its great to finally get an update from De Niro himself for The Irishman (via. Digital Spy).

“We are doing it… We should be doing it sometime next year,” De Niro said. “We’re slowly, slowly getting it in place.”

What are the chances De Niro is correct? Its worth noting that Scorsese has finished filming his latest drama Silence, starring Andrew Garfield. That film was recently pushed back to next year for some finishing touches. After that, Scorsese could move on to do The Irishman next. Its the most furthest developed film out of all of Scorsese’s planned projects, with a screenplay written by Steve Zaillian (Schindler’s List).

Its also worth mentioning the every single member of this dream cast isn’t getting any younger. Both Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci are 72 years old, while Al Pacino is 75 years old. Time to get moving Scorsese!

Look for more updates to come sometime within the next few months.

  1. Anyone who follows or studies the mob knows that Frank Sheeran had nothing to do with the Gallo shooting. I don’t understand why a director like Scorsese would propagate this nonsense. He likely had nothing to do with the Hoffa disappearance either. Anything to make a movie I guess.
