First it was Independence Day and now Men in Black will move on without its star, Will Smith. (Should I be worried about Bad Boys 3?) Producers of the previous MiB trilogy Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald spoke a Toronto’s International Film Festival (via. The Hollywood Reporter) on the future plans for the franchise. They revealed Sony Pictures is actively trying to reboot the franchise into a trilogy, and Smith will most likely not be apart of it.
Surprisingly, I’m not surprised about this news. Sony can do a lot more with this franchise, and they’re ready to move on after both Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. These films can expand beyond just two agents, and tell more stories. Remember the rumored crossover between 21 Jump Street and Men in Black?
I would like to see Will Smith come back to some extent, perhaps taking over as the “police captain” of MiB headquarters. I doubt Smith would be up for that, but who knows. The actor surprised us all when he chose to be apart of an ensemble cast for Suicide Squad. As for the Men in Black reboot, we’re a long ways off until anything official comes to light. When it does, I’ll be here to talk about it.
