Channing Tatum’s ‘Gambit’ Film Takes Another Step Back – Director Exits

A good chunk of the internet out there seems to be against Channing Tatum as Gambit, or let alone a Gambit movie happening. But for 20th Century Fox, Gambit will be an important part of their plans once Hugh Jackman retires as Wolverine.

It seemed the Gambit movie was moving along fine, after the project finally found its director in Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) and Tatum officially signing his deal to star. Well you can throw that belief right out the window.

There have been reports of disputes over the production budget causing re-writes to the script, along with a shift in the start of production, and now they’re back to no director with Wyatt exiting the project (via. THR).

Wyatt’s departure is somewhat disappointing. I really enjoyed Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, which rebooted the franchise and served as the origin story for Caesar. The Gambit movie is said to be approached in the same way, making Wyatt a good choice. Fortunately, the production start date has been moved from next month to the beginning of next year. That gives Fox probably two months to find the right person.

I have confidence they’ll find right person. Since 2011, the studio has brought on directors such as Matthew Vaughn (X-Men: First Class), Bryan Singer (X-Men: DOFP, Apocalypse), Tim Miller (Deadpool), and I still believe Josh Trank (Fantastic Four) was a great choice.

Here’s Rupert Wyatt’s statement from 20th Century Fox.

“I was very much looking forward to working with my friend Channing and the team at Fox, but regrettably a push in the start date now conflicts with another project.  I thank them for the opportunity, and I know that Gambit will make a terrific film.”

Gambit has a scheduled theatrical release for October 7, 2016

    • That would be unfortunate. Tatum’s acting career is at the highest its ever been, and he’s really passionate about making this film. I think they’ll find the right person.
