It’s official, Jason Bourne is back. The first image from the set of the currently untitled Bourne sequel has been released and man is it awesome. Both Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon are returning to the ass-kicking franchise and this first look image lets us know that this film is officially coming.
Before the dropping of this image, the film has been pretty damn confidential, just as much as the spy world itself. But thanks to Damon, we do know that Bourne 5 will take place in a “post-Snowden world”, tackling topics such as espionage and politics, which is something much more than the previous films. But back to the image… Courtesy of franchise producer Frank Marshall, we now have our first look at Matt Damon returning to the role of Jason Bourne.
As you can see, Bourne 5 just began its production, and it looks like it kicked-off with Bourne back in full-fledged fighting mode. The image reveals two things, either Bourne is wrapping up for a fight club style brawl, or he just finished pummeling the s**t out of someone. That, and Damon is in some serious shape to take on the Bourne character once again, something we’ve all been waiting for. Damon has previously revealed that the film will open in Greece and close in Las Vegas, marking both the start of democracy and the height of debauchery, but this scene more than likely takes place somewhere in between.
It’s going to be interesting to see how the bare-knuckle action comes in to play, but here Damon talks about just a few of the ideas that served as inspiration for Bourne 5:
“We always looked at those movies as really about the Bush presidency, and so we kind of had to wait for the world to change…Without giving too much of it away, it’s Bourne through an austerity-riddled Europe and in a post-Snowden world. It seems like enough has changed, you know? There are all these kinds of arguments about spying and civil liberties and the nature of democracy.”
That kind of comment definitely leaves some big questions, questions I can’t wait to have answered. The first three films were a personal fight for Bourne, so hearing that this film will follow Bourne on a different and much bigger path is very exciting.
Bourne 5 is set for a July 29th, 2016 release date. Directed by Paul Greengrass starring Matt Damon, Vincent Cassel, Alicia Vikander, Julia Stiles, and Tommy Lee Jones.
