From Fox Searchlight comes the first trailer for the upcoming drama Demolition. Directed by Jean-Marc Vallée (Dallas Buyers Club & Wild), the film stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a husband who just lost his wife to a tragic car crash. Soon after, he starts writing these letters that reveal startling personal admissions, as the synopsis describes. When an ordinary customer service rep (Naomi Watts) comes across these letters, the two form an unlikely bond.
I love pairing of Gyllenhaal with a director like Jean-Marc Vallée. I saw Wild earlier this year and was amazed at the performance he got out of Reese Witherspoon (and before that McConaughey in Dallas Buyers Club). Both of those films found the central characters sort of rediscovering themselves and the drama in each story hits on a deeper level. When you have an actor like Gyllenhaal in your movie, you’ll never have to be concerned about his performance. I’m more excited to see what he’ll bring to this character.
And how about Gyllenhaal’s choice of roles this year. From the Boxer in search of redemption in Southpaw, to a member of the crew that faced tremendous odds on their journey climbing Mt. Everest. This guy can do it all.
Check out the trailer below for Demolition, which will premiere at the Toronto Film Festival later this week, with an official release for April 8, 2016.
