Get a Great Inside Look at ‘Black Mass’ from a New Featurette; A Pair of TV Spots Showcase Johnny Depp’s Heavy Performance

When I got my first look at the new crime/drama Black Mass, I was only slightly intrigued by this Johnny Depp led film. Now until just a few days ago, I had the same feeling about it throughout all its trailers, spots and everything else. But then the films embargo was pulled back and early reviews hit, and instantly my mind flipped.

I went from mildly interested to yeah, I definitely want to go opening night. And yes, that is just the very early word being put out there, but that early word has definitely been backed up in the following videos. Take a look at a new featurette and TV spots for Black Mass below:

There are two big things that pop out to me. One being that this is very much a character and story driven film, which is exactly what this kind of film should be. There have been many movies in the past that are similar but fail because they focus on things that just aren’t as important. As I look back, it very much looks like Black Mass is focusing on what makes a great film.

Lastly, Johnny Depp’s performance. Yeah it’s a total Depp role and looks pretty damn creepy, but man does it just look stellar. In fact, that’s one of the biggest points in those early reviews I was talking about. That Johnny Depp is back and back in a big way. I’ve even seen that phrase “Oscar nomination” thrown around, which is a big step compared to his last few years of work.

Black Mass hits theaters on September 18th, 2015. Directed by Scott Cooper starring Johnny Depp, Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Dakota Johnson, Kevin Bacon, Jesse Plemons, Peter Sarsgaard, Corey Stoll, Juno Temple, and Adam Scott.
