This past weekend was Dinsey’s big comic-con like event of their own, known as D23. Each year Disney brings all their upcoming and in development films to once place for announcements, presentations and much more. Now while there is a ton to talk about what went down over the weekend, this post is all about the very first Star Wars spin-off film, titled Star Wars: Rogue One.
Even though we’ve known about the project for some time and know at least a few details about it, we now get the chance to found out even more with each week as Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation is now in theaters, such as cast members, characters, exact time period, and much more. And luckily for us, Disney gave us exactly what we wanted and released the first official image for Gareth Edwards’ Star Wars: Rogue One, which reveals much more than just a few new cast members.
What an incredible, incredible first look at the film. First off let’s start with the now official cast. Felicity Jones has been in the lead role for some time now, and both Riz Ahmed and Diego Luna have been reported to be part of it as well (just not confirmed) for just about the same amount of time, but now they are officially part of the Star Wars universe. On top of that, the other two long reported names of Ben Mendelsohn and Forest Whitaker were officially confirmed to be a part of Rogue One, it’s just unfortunate we didn’t get our first look at them as well. And on top of that, Disney also announced that Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Mads Mikkelsen, and Alan Tudyk (who will be doing a performance-capture role) will be rounding the cast.
From a talent and diversity perspective, it’s an outstanding main cast. Brining these type of actors togethers for this kind of film is fantastic, and I can’t wait to see what they’re are able to do together. It does suck that (as of now) this cast is a little short on actresses, but as happened with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, I’m sure more names will be announced through its production, and hopefully more of those names are female names to go alongside Felicity Jones. But with that aside, the ensemble so far is phenomenal and should add some great dynamic to Edwards’ story.
As far as the actual image goes, it tells a lot. First is the tone of it, it just feels like a true and serious war film – almost Saving Private Ryan-esque, which is what we were promised and which is by far the greatest thing going for it so far. Next is the look of these characters. Up until now, it’s been made out that we’ll be going along this journey with a special group of soldiers – like a Black Ops division – who are going to steal the plans of the first Death Star. But one look at this image and I feel like this unit of characters are bounty hunters. I could be way off base, but it just screams bounty hunters at me and if so, I couldn’t be anymore freaking excited for what’s to come with this film.
What do you think of the first look image? How about the cast announcements? Any favorites? Are you excited for Rogue One or still not sold on it? Let me know in the comments below!
