I’m finally back from my extended family leave, and just in time as Comic Con picks up speed. For me, this annual event has always been about the comic book movies. When Marvel first rocked the scene as an independent studio in ’06, is when Comic Con jumped on my radar. Their absence this year presents a big opportunity for Warner Bros and their DC property to drop tons of news this coming Saturday in Hall H.
The first piece of news (Deadline) concerns a Batman standalone film finding a director in its star Ben Affleck. This comes as no surprise really. If you’re a Batman fan, then you have to be excited about this. Affleck is a good actor and an even better director. The report also mentions that Chief Creative Officer for DC Comics Geoff Johns will co-write the script with Affleck. No further details including a release date or story details have been announced, but I expect we’ll learn more within the next few days.
Its worth mentioning that some of Batman’s major villains will appear in next year’s Suicide Squad including The Joker (Jared Leto), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Deadshot (Will Smith), Hugo Strange (Ike Barinholtz), and Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje). Where those characters stand at the end of the film should give us a better idea of who will appear and the extent of their role.
Relax Haters, I Got This
Affleck’s next directorial effort will be the crime thriller Live By Night (based on Dennis Lehane’s Prohibition-era) which has been officially green lit by Warner Bros. That film releases on October 7, 2016.
