Rocky, one of the most inspiring characters and franchises to ever hit the screen. The boxing drama series took sport movies to new heights as we watched Sylvester Stallone bring this character to life in a way that everyone could relate to in one way or another. Six movies into the franchise and it just never felt like quite enough, we were still wanting more, we always wanted to see what came next for Rocky and the franchise as a whole.
Well, last year answered that long asked question as the next entry into the Rocky franchise was announced. And instead of putting Rocky himself back into the ring, he now steps into the (Mickey) mentor role for the son of his long time friend (and once rival) Apollo Creed. Starring Michael B. Jordan as Adonis Creed and Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa, here’s the unbelievable first trailer for Creed.
Okay, so to be honest, I wasn’t feeling this trailer like I should have the first time I watched it. I didn’t know how I felt about the rap music in the background and the feel of it. But I watched it a second, then a third, then a fourth, and my god, this is one of the best trailers to be released in the last few months. Beautiful, strong, chilling, and just straight up inspiring.
When I first heard the idea of doing more Rocky movies with it this time focusing on Apollo’s son and putting Rocky in the mentor role, I was pretty much sold at that point. I don’t think there’s any better way out there to continue this story and franchise, and then the casting of Michael B. Jordan and bringing on of director Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station) happened and it from here to HERE. All we needed was a trailer to show us that what was unfolding was exactly what we thought, and man did the trailer deliver in some very, very exciting ways.
My love for this trailer comes from the fact that the first two-thirds of it solely focuses on Michael B. Jordan character Adonis Creed. Many classic franchises that are returning with the very actors that made it famous like to play the, let’s call it the ‘nostalgia’ card (Terminator: Genisys). But this is brave enough to not even show Stallone’s Rocky until we dig deep enough into Jordan’s character. There’s no doubt that Creed will revolve around the relationship between the two, but this trailer does a fantastic job of letting us know that this is Adonis Creed’s story, with great guidance from the legendary Rocky of course.
Creed steps into theaters on November 25th, 2015. Directed by Ryan Coogler starring Michael B. Jordan, Sylvester Stallone, Tessa Thompson, and Phylicia Rashad.
