Prior to Marvel’s The Avengers becoming a landmark for comic book films and proving that superhero team ups can work, the studio was finding itself. The directors who were part of the phase one films were instrumental in helping Marvel president Kevin Feige guide the cinematic universe and help transition these characters from the comic book pages to the big screen. The most popular directors who receive a lot of the credit are Joss Whedon and Jon Faverau, and rightfully so. However there is one director who took on a difficult task as well, and that was Kenneth Branagh directing a Thor film.
I remember questioning just how Marvel would make such a film. Thor was largely unknown to me, but I knew who he was, and he was certainly different than any of the other popular Marvel characters (Ironman, Captain America, Hulk, etc). Branagh pulled it off though, introducing audiences to Thor and making the film more comedic and human drama related than expected. Looking back, I realize that was not an easy film to make, especially under the strict guidelines of Marvel. Branagh went on to direct the underwhelming Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit before striking gold once again for Disney with Cinderella.
Now it looks like Branagh might reunite with Marvel to direct the third Thor film titled Ragnarok.
Heroic Hollywood’s Umberto Gonzalez revealed he’s hearing that Marvel offered the director the gig. Whether Branagh accepted or not is unclear, but what is clear is that the director has interest in working with Marvel again, according to his own words while promoting Cinderella.
This makes sense for Marvel seeing as Ragnarok has heavy implications on the M.C.U moving forward. For those who aren’t aware, the term Rangarok means “the end of all things“. You can already visualize something terrible is going to happen at Asgard. For a film of this magnitude, Marvel would be smart to turn to someone who has experience in this world and with these characters. I know a lot of fans who think highly of the first Thor film, so this would be a welcoming reunion.
We’ll know soon if Kenneth Branagh is returning to the M.C.U. The question is “do you want him back or do you have someone else in mind“? Let us know your director.
Thor: Ragnarok is set to release on November 3, 2017
