Indiana Jones might come sooner than expected according to a new rumor. First lets recap the property’s current state.
Kingdom of the Crystal Skull released in ’08 and made almost $800 million total during its theatrical run. It was a big success financially, but not so much critically (for many reasons). Four years later Disney purchased Lucasfilm in ’12, and while Star Wars became the priority, Indy was in the back of everybody’s mind. There were talks of Harrison Ford lobbying hard for one more run as Indy, and further reports speculated that his involvement in the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens meant that Disney had to at least get the gears going on Indy 5. That was in ’13. Fast forward to this year and Kathleen Kennedy (President of Lucasfilm) gives us an update on the progress of Indy 5…
From Vanity Fair: Kennedy confirmed rumors that another Indy movie “will one day be made inside this company. When it will happen, I’m not quite sure. We haven’t started working on a script yet, but we are talking about it.”
Which brings us to present day, where Ain’t it Cool News is reporting their spies inside Lucasfilm are revealing that the studio has penciled in a Winter 2018 release for the next Indiana Jones film. The report doesn’t go into further details, but the source claims their people are longtime and trustworthy.
That’s nice and all, but its still so far from confirmed that its almost not worth mentioning. However, I’m so excited for another Indiana Jones film that I couldn’t help but talk about it. Once Disney has the Star Wars universe up and running, they will turn their attention towards the Indiana Jones property. There’s too much money to be made by not letting it sit around.
As for this rumor, I’m more confused than I am certain of its legitimacy. Producer Frank Marshall (Indy 1-4, Jurassic World) and husband to Kathleen Kennedy told /Film that its just an internet rumor and there have been no talks of Indy 5 to date.
Who will be the next Indiana Jones?
While this could very much be a rumor, I find it hard to believe there hasn’t at least been discussions. Plus he said no talks on Indy 5, which means they could be looking to reboot the franchise (going technical here). That is a strong possibility when considering that Harrison Ford is turning 73 years old this July. The source who said the next Indy film is coming in 2018 are also saying that Steven Spielberg hand picked Chris Pratt to helm the fedora hat. Not a far fetch rumor considering the director gave his stamp of approval for Jurassic World.
One thing is certain, the discussions on what might happen next for Indiana Jones have begun among the internet community. Let us know what you think about all this in the comments below!
