Production on Independence Day 2 recently began, and producer/co-writer Dean Devlin has released a photo featuring a familiar face in Jeff Goldblum returning as David Levinson. The sequel takes place 15 years after the ’96 blockbuster and Goldblum’s role is said to be significant to the overall plot. Speaking of the plot for Independence Day 2, an official plot synopsis has been appearing on several sites (including Rotten Tomatoes). Read it below.
We always knew they were coming back. After INDEPENDENCE DAY redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global catastrophe on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.
After reading this plot synopsis its not hard to visualize why returning actors like Goldblum, Bill Pullman, and even Brent Spiner could have key roles. All three (along with Will Smith) were instrumental in defeating the aliens in the first film. Director Roland Emmerich has mentioned a number of times that the sequel will dive into the mythology of the aliens. His original two part sequel has at the moment become one, and depending on how the audience reception is to the sequel could determine if more films come after.
For now, I remain very curious about how Independence Day 2 will turn out to be. Although, seeing the picture of Goldblum above gives me a bit of nostalgia and excitement. That’s a good thing to help ease the empty void felt by Will Smith’s absence.
(Update: actor William Fichtner has signed a three picture deal for a major role in Independence Day films. According to Deadline, Fichtner will play a high rank General in Earth’s military force.)
