You can add another name to the Star Wars character list! Coming from StarWars.com, they have revealed that Andy Serkis is playing a character named Supreme Leader Snoke and that he will in fact be performance capture, something Serkis is very familiar with.
Included in the article is the first official image of Serkis taking on the Star Wars character, check it and more out below:
Now the question becomes, who is Supreme Leader Snoke exactly? What is he the Supreme Leader of? The First Order maybe? The only thing we know of the character right now is that he’s the one delivering the dialogue from the first teaser trailer: “There has been an awakening. Have you felt it? The dark side and the light.” So it seems that Snoke is a character who is familiar with both sides of the force, possibly some kind of Sith or fallen Jedi? Also, the name is Supreme Leader is interesting, could we be seeing the next Emperor Palpatine type character?
I for one thought there was a strong possibility that Serkis could be playing the legendary Sith character Darth Plagueis, especially after that interesting looking staff that Rey had appeared in the latest trailer. But it isn’t shocking to see Serkis playing a new character that hasn’t been introduced into the Star Wars universe yet, especially since Disney and J.J. Abrams want to do whatever they can to separate these new movies from the prequels.
It also comes to no surprise to see that Serkis is doing a performance capture role. There was some speculation (and kind of hope) that we would see Serkis’ face in these new movies, but he is the master at mo-cap so it just makes sense. That then raises even more questions like is he just a disfigured human or a new species that we’ve never seen before?
Lots of questions to still be answered about The Force Awakens, but I for one am happy that there still is so much mystery about the new Star Wars. But at least we are steadily learning the names of the characters we’ll see join the galaxy far, far away: Rey, Finn, Poe Dameron, BB8, Kylo Ren, Maz Kanata, Captain Phasma, and now… Supreme Leader Snoke.
