First Look: Matt Damon Is a Stranded Astronaut in ‘The Martian’

While Ridley Scott’s last outing, Exodus: Gods and Kings, was a complete disaster in my opinion, his next project is still very exciting. He’s adapting the best-selling novel The Martian from Andy Weir, and while the majority of the film with focus on Matt Damon’s character who is stranded on Mars, the supporting cast is just ridiculously impressive.

First off, here’s an official synopsis:

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible, rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return. Based on a best-selling novel.

Even though most of the film will focus on Damon’s characters isolation and battle to survive on Mars (which is exactly what the first official images from below show), there’s still a supporting cast and a damn good one at that: Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Kate Mara, Kristen Wiig, Sebastian Stan, Donald Glover, Mackenzie Davis, Michael Peña, and Sean Bean.

Check out the new images below, which come from multiple sources (such as Entertainment Weekly and People):

These images are definitely foreshadowing what we’ll see in The Martian. They show Damon in a number of different situations (emotionally and physically), letting us know what kind of journey we’ll be taking when we sit down to watch it later this year.

I for one am extremely excited for this one. Science-fiction/outer space movies are my jam man, they’re like candy to me, addicting. And yeah, Ridley Scott has been on a total poo slide lately and even though I don’t really give him the benefit of the doubt anymore, I’m still really looking forward to it. I might end up regretting it later on, but the script is from the hands of Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods, Netflix Daredevil), Scott’s trademark is his beautiful visuals and design (which should fit very well with this film), and the cast is just unbelievable, how can I not be excited? I can’t wait to see that first full trailer.

The Martian lands November 25th, 2015. Directed by Ridley Scott starring Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Kate Mara, Kristen Wiig, Sebastian Stan, Donald Glover, Mackenzie Davis, Michael Peña, and Sean Bean.
