It seems like Duncan Jones’ Warcraft movie has been going on for years now. Filming was concluded on the project about a year ago and since then Jones has steadily been teasing us. The last thing we heard on the movie was that it had been pushed back from March to June of next year so that it can bring in that big-budget summer audience (great move), but it also let us know how confident they are in it.
Now, we get a glimpse as to why. The first official images for Warcraft have been released giving us our first look at one the main characters, Orc leader Ogrim Doomhammer, played by Robert Kazinsky. Kazinsky will be portraying Doomhammer via motion capture, but the character himself is almost all done by Industrial Light and Magic (ILM). Check out the images below:
I know absolutely nothing about the game of Warcraft, so here’s a little excerpt of the character thanks to those over at /Film:
“The character is pretty important, as he’s the leader of the Horde and likely owner of the Doomhammer, one of the most iconic weapons in the world of Warcraft, forged by his father.”
The look of the character is just killer, visually stunning. But even though it is that good, it’s the story that will make a bigger impact. There isn’t really anything known about the Warcraft story, but it’s rumored and kind of expected that it will revolve around the first meeting between Ogrim’s Orcs (The Horde) and the humans, known as The Alliance.
For it just being Jones’ third time in the director’s chair (Moon, Source Code), he seems to be going for the long ball. Both Moon and Source Code were unbelievable and highly critically approved, but were no where near the big-budget kind of movie Warcraft is. I personally wasn’t attached to any of The Lord of the Rings like many were, so I’m really hoping Jones can make a movie that grabs me much more than those.
Warcraft now has a June 10th, 2016 release date. Directed by Duncan Jones starring Travis Fimmel, Paula Patton, Toby Kebbell, Ben Foster, Robert Kazinsky, Dominic Cooper, Daniel Wu, and Clancy Brown.
