I know I’m pretty late on this one, but I want to talk about it anyway! When Star Wars Celebration was going down a few weeks back, The Force Awakens wasn’t the only thing being looked forward to by millions of people, the Star Wars spin-offs were just as anticipated that weekend as everything else.
Once that remarkable teaser trailer hit for The Force Awakens and fans wiped their tears away, everyone knew that that Rogue One panel could end up being pretty damn special…and man was it. As director Gareth Edwards took to the stage, we had no idea how much of a treat we were all in for. By the end of the panel, we learned what the official name was for his spin-off, got an official plot summary, who is set to star in the lead role, and even a piece of concept art and teaser trailer!
First off, the official name was revealed to be Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One. Weeks before SWCA, we knew the movie would be titled Rogue One, but the Anthology part was definitely a nice surprise. It’s pretty cools to see Disney and Lucasfilm coming up with something very sleek yet creative to separate these spin-off movies from the actual Episodes movies. All spin-off movies from here on out will take the Star Wars Anthology name, which sounds very very cool.
Here’s the logo:
A plot summary was also released during the panel, confirming what’s been speculated and rumored for months now, the first Death Star! It’s not about a group of Bounty Hunters like we all kind of thought, but it’s about the taking of the first Death Star plans, meaning it’s the prequel we always wanted! Check it out:
A rogue band of resistance fighters unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans.
The film is set to take place between Episode III and Episode V, with director Gareth Edwards confirming that it takes place “after Episode 3, before Episode 4… a little bit more towards 4.” Also, the rumor became reality as Felicity Jones was confirmed to be starring in Rogue One as a ‘rebel soldier’ who Edwards is describing as more “reality based.” Even if she is more reality based, could she still be someone we’ve seen before? Possibly a character from either of the Star Wars animated shows The Clone Wars or Rebels? Or how about a character from the disgraced ‘expanded universe’? Hmm…
Edwards also teased that Rogue One will be more than just the stealing of the Death Star plans:
“God’s not coming to save us. We are on our own. And we are going to have to do this ourselves. We have to turn it around… It comes down to a group of individuals that don’t have special powers.”
Man, it sounds like some serious good stuff! It’s literally like Star Wars heaven for it to become real that we’re going to be able to sit down and watch a movie about the stealing of the original Death Star plans, the event that literally kick-started the original Star Wars trilogy, as it was the first thing we ever saw and knew in a Star Wars movie.
The note of “don’t have special powers” is most likely pointing towards no Jedi or Sith in the movie, as the Jedi are basically extinct because of Order 66. And don’t get me wrong, I love seeing some kick-ass Jedi/Sith and lightsabers, but I very much like the approach Edwards is taking. From what he said and from what we know, it’s going to be a serious war movie, which is insanely exciting!
Along with all the sweet, sweet goodness above, the Lucasfilm team and Edwards treated all the fans in attendance at SWCA to a badass piece of concept art and a chilling teaser trailer! And luckily for us we live in a world of technology that can do anything, so for all of us who weren’t at the panel, we still get a chance to check it out!
How freaking great does that look? I don’t know about you, but just from this concept art and the teaser trailer from below, my excitement it through the freaking roof for this movie.
Sorry for the bad quality, but that’s the best I could find. And if you were wondering, that is Alec Guinness’ voice from the original Star Wars. But I do want to throw something out there… If you add where this film takes place (between Episode III and IV), the plot summary, and the screams and cries going through the radio to end the teaser, is that Alderaan? Are we finally going to see what those final days on Alderaan looked like before the Death Star destroyed the planet? If so, holy freaking crap…
All in all, YES. I was looking forward to this movie like no other because well, it’s a Star Wars movie. But after hearing what it’s going to be about and the timeline, who is set to star in the lead role, and (luckily) be able to see early concepts of the film, Gareth Edwards seems to be getting down to some serious business and creating his best possible vision. Spin-off movies are meant to open up the universe more and focus on things outside of the characters and stories we see in the connected movies, and Rogue One looks like the prime example of that. While it builds into the overall story, it expands the universe even more and gives us the chance to meet even more characters in the process. Something I just can’t wait for.
What do you think of all the Rogue One goodies above? Do you like the Anthology title the spin-offs will take? Is Felicity Jones a good choice to star (yes)? What about all of Gareth Edwards comments? Stay tune as I’m sure more on Rogue One will be headed our way soon!
Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One has a December 16th, 2016 release date. Directed by Gareth Edwards starring Felicity Jones with Ben Mendelsohn, Riz Ahmed, and Sam Claflin rumored to join.
