‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Gets a Batch of New Images, a Behind-the-Scenes Video & Cover from Vanity Fair; Adam Driver, Lupita Nyong’o & Gwendoline Christie’s Characters Revealed!

Like others have pointed out, yesterday’s Star Wars Day marked the first one in a decade that has taken place the same year a Star Wars movie is coming out, a decade! And man was it a May 4th to remember. By the time 10 a.m. rolled around yesterday morning, it had already become one of the best Star Wars Day in years. Check it!

Vanity Fair released the new images, which were shot by Annie Leibovitz at London’s Pinewood Studios where The Force Awakens was filmed. Below you can see Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, Lupita Nyong’o, and the so-called ‘Star Wars brain trust’ in some really great shots; along with the images are the captions posted by VF, which reveal some seriously juicy details.

Oh how good are they? The images (and video below) reveal some pretty big things. One is that they (FINALLY) confirm that longstanding rumor that Adam Driver is playing Kylo Ren, the new villain of the Star Wars universe. Now the question becomes whether or not he’s Sith.

Two being that we finally learn who Lupita Nyong’o is playing, Maz Kanata, a CGI character (alien) described as a pirate. But, just because she’s a ‘pirate’ doesn’t necessarily mean she’s a bad, or good guy for that matter. She could be a Jabba the Hut type character, one who plays both sides for her own benefit.

Here’s the cool behind-the-scenes video I was talking about, showing us what it looks like to be on the set of a Star Wars movie (oh how glorious that would be).

But everything above isn’t all. Following the release of all the awesome goodies above, it became known that one more big character would be revealed, which ended up being the AWESOME Chrome Trooper from the AWESOME second teaser trailer. Who could be playing the badass Troop? None other than Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie. Along with Christie being announced as the character, she was given a name, Captain Phasma.

Along with Adam Driver, I can’t freaking wait to see how they fare in the Star Wars universe. Driver has become one of the best young actors of today, but now it’s time for him to unleash some serious badass-ness that hasn’t been seen yet. As for Christie, she’s been rocking it on Game of Thrones for years now. That role is pretty meaty and physical, but this is Star Wars! Now we’re really going to see how action legit she is in a giant tentpole film like this one (I have faith!).

Here’s the first full look at Christie’s Captain Phasma:

Gwendoline Christie as Captain PhasmaAnd to round out all the fantastic stuff released on Star Wars Day, here’s a look at the cover of Vanity Fair’s June issue. It features three of the new characters joining the galaxy far far away: Finn (John Boyega), Rey (Daisy Ridley), and that cute little droid BB8. They join arguably two of the most, if not the most loved characters of classic Star Wars, Han and Chewie.

Vanity Fair 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Photo

It’s a beautifully shot cover photo, and does beg a question. Are these The Force Awakens leads? Is this photo foreshadowing that maybe these are the characters we’ll taking this (right now, mysterious) journey with (along with Poe Dameron)? Quite possibly, but we won’t know for some time. Until then, I’ll definitely be getting my hands on this issue. December can’t get here any freaking faster!

Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in a galaxy near you December 18th, 2015. Directed by J.J. Abrams starring the originals Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher with Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson, Andy Serkis, Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie, and Max von Sydow.
