The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise may not be the ‘best’ around today, but it’s certainly one of the biggest as fans get some major joy out of the movies. Personally, the movies haven fallen a bit short following the second movie, but that’s not going to stop this franchise because of the big bucks it makes.
Which leads to the next installment, subtitled Dead Men Tell No Tales. It began production back in February, but had to take a little break because of Johnny Depp injuring his hand during filming. Depp has recently returned to set, starting production back up again for the fifth installment in the franchise. To make sure fans know everything is okay, franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer has tweeted out the first official image for the movie. How can it be of anyone else?
Like I said above, I pretty much turned off each Pirates movie after the second one, but that doesn’t mean I don’t look forward to them. I’ve seen what these movies can really do and still hold out some kind of hope that the next can repeat what the first two did. From everything that’s known about the fifth sequel, it sounds like they could actually be going back to the roots of the franchise, which is a great sign.
As for the image, it’s a cool first look. Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow character is the face of these movies, a face that always seems to be in some kind of trouble. So it’s a great nod to all the swashbuckling that’s gone on over the past so many movies. Also, it may just be the lighting, but this Sparrow looks just a bit older than previous ones, which could point towards the team going in a different direction with the character and story. Something to watch out for.
Here’s an official synopsis:
Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea…including him. Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales sails into theaters on July 7th, 2017. Directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg starring Johnny Depp, Javier Bardem, Orlando Bloom, Brenton Thwaites, Kaya Scodelario, Golshifteh Farahani, Kevin R. McNally, and Geoffrey Rush.
