A decade ago, Matthew McConaughey was doing more of ‘non-serious’ roles, mostly romantic comedies. But then came the McConaissance: The Lincoln Lawyer, Killer Joe, Mud, Dallas Buyers Club, The Wolf of Wall Street, True Detective, and Interstellar. Now he is forever in the spotlight with everyone looking forward to what he’ll do next. One of those next projects is The Free State of Jones, which is set in the Civil War era. See McConaughey in the first look image for The Free State of Jones below.
Here’s an official synopsis:
Set during the Civil War, The Free State of Jones tells the story of defiant Southern farmer Newt Knight, and his extraordinary armed rebellion against the Confederacy. Banding together with other small farmers, and with the assistance of local slaves, Knight launched an uprising that led Jones County, Mississippi to secede from the Confederacy, creating a Free State of Jones. His marriage to a former slave, Rachel, and his subsequent establishment of a mixed race community was unique in the post-war South. Knight continued his struggle into Reconstruction, which distinguished him as a compelling, if controversial, figure of defiance long beyond the War.
I’ve said it before, I’m a total sucker for war films, especially historical ones. And as of late, I’ve become a sucker for McConaughey and the body of work he’s been putting out. While I’m not familiar with the true story of Newton Knight, I’m very much looking forward to learning more about him and the true story behind him. A true story war drama starring the McConaughey? Hell. Yes.
The Free State of Jones has a March 11th, 2016 release date. Directed by Gary Ross starring Matthew McConaughey, Keri Russell, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Mahershala Ali.
