Tidbits: 'X-Men: Apocalypse' Casting, 'John Wick' Sequel, 'Star Trek 3' Villain Role & More

Below you can see which actress is reprising her X-Men role, what John Wick director had to say about a sequel, who is rumored to be wanted for the Star Trek 3 villain, the official title given to Cameron Crowe’s romantic comedy, what J.K. Simmons had to say about possibly playing J. Jonah Jameson again, director David Ayer teasing more Suicide Squad, and when you can expect Neighbors 2.

X-Men: Apocalypse

Screenwriter/producer Simon Kinberg (for both X-Men and The Fantastic Four franchises) revealed earlier this week that Rose Byrne will be reprising her role of Moira MacTaggert in X-Men: Apocalypse.

Rose Byrne in 'X-Men: First Class'

After the big role she played in X-Men: First Class, I was a bit surprised to not see her come back Days of Future Past, even for a cameo. But for how it First Class ended, it did make some sense. So I’m for sure happy with this news because Rose Byrne rocks. Here’s what Kinberg had to say while talking with Entertainment Weekly:

“She’s a significant character in the movie. We ended First Class with Charles having wiped portions of her memory of her experience with the X-Men. They are, essentially, strangers to her when she meets them. It’s certainly a rich relationship that we started to dig into in First Class, and would like to mine more in this one.”

I’m now very interested to see how she is brought back in and how she becomes that ‘significant character’ Kingbird is talking about, certainly after the whole mind wiping thing. Kingberg also talked about Apocalypse itself, and how it will wrap up the story started in First Class:

“This movie is the completion of the first arcs of Charles, Eric, Raven, and Hank, who are essentially our main characters. They’re such young actors and young characters, so there’s a lot more story to tell. But as a first phase of their lives, there is this feeling of closure by the end of the movie.”

“That’s the era that I grew up in. The music, the fashion, the videogames: We really want to integrate all of that in the movie, and have it infuse the movie with a different vibe.”

X-Men: Apocalypse is slated for May 27, 2016.

John Wick 2

Keanu Reeves in 'Joh Wick'

2014 had two very big surprise action movies, Edge of Tomorrow and John Wick. Now while I absolutely loved them both, I just can’t get over the action in John Wick. It was such a pleasant surprise, literally kicking ass all over the place. Since it was so good, a lot of fans were wondering about a possible sequel or prequel or spin-off. And since the movie grossed more than 50 million of its budget, why not? Well we now have official word that a John Wick sequel is in early development.

While in an interview, director Chad Stahelski talked about what to expect if/when the sequel happens:

“We have ideas for days and without blinking twice we know we can outdo the action from the original. It’s the matter of story and how much you like the character. That’s always the most important. If there’s great action but you have a character that no one likes and doesn’t have charisma you’re not going to watch it. Look at any great action star, whether it’s Harrison Ford or Liam Neeson or Robert Downey Jr., pick a name, you love the guy first. Good action, bad action, you just love them in action. So we want to make sure we have a story and a character that everybody loves and then we’ll dress it with action that we promise will be awesome.”

While John Wick was pretty basic, it kicked ass at entertaining. We rarely see action movies like it these days, so to get the chance to see this team go back to this world sounds so awesome. And surprisingly, I would be happy with seeing a prequel, sequel, or some kind of spin-off because the world created in John Wick is so rich. My picks? A prequel where we see how Wick got the name Boogeyman or a spin-off on that really cool assassin, no work on grounds Hotel. Anyway I could see this action again.

John Wick is now out on Blu-ray and DVD.

Star Trek 3

To get it out of the way, take everything below with a grain of salt for now as it’s all rumors for now. With that said, a site titled Film Divider is saying that the villain for Star Trek 3 will be “Bryan Cranston-like…’ and that “Cranston himself has had words…” with Paramount about possibly joining in as the villain.

Bryan Cranston

While just a rumor for now, I would love to see Cranston join the Star Trek universe as a villain, if this ever gets farther than a rumor. And I know that I wouldn’t be the only one loving it.

The same site is also saying that three new major female characters will be introduced in the threequel. Described as the captain of another Federation ship, the President of the United Federation of Planets, and Bones’ ex-wife.

While I’m always in for more major female characters, I feel like the new big screen Star Trek universe has them already. Zoe Saldana is a star and she is incredible as Uhura, and I don’t know if she’ll be back, but I though Alice Eve was a great addition and I would personally love to see her character come back. If this happens, I’d be down for maybe just one major female character, but not all.

Star Trek 3 has a July 8th, 2016 release date.

Cameron Crowe’s Romantic Comedy

Image of 'Aloha'

Jerry Macguire, Almost Famous, and Vanilla Sky – that’s what’s on Cameron Crowe’s resume. Just from those, it’s safe to say that Crowe knows the rom-com genre pretty well. His latest project is now in post-production and worked its entirety without a title, until now. The official title is Aloha, which fits it very well as it shot in Hawaii.

Here’s a synopsis:

A celebrated military contractor returns to the site of his greatest career triumphs and re-connects with a long-ago love while unexpectedly falling for the hard-charging Air Force watchdog assigned to him.

Aloha will open May 29th, 2015. Directed by Cameron Crowe starring Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, Rachel McAdams, John Krasinski, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride, Alec Baldwin, and Bill Murray.

J.K. Simmons

JK Simmons as J. Jonah Simmons

While Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy was loved for the great take and story-telling on the web-slinger, there’s no doubt that one of the best parts of the entire trilogy was J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson. For those who know the character, Simmons nailed it right on the head and now we have the Hugh Jackman syndrome. The only person we can see Jameson is Simmons as we can only see Jackman playing Wolverine.

With The Amazing Spider-Man movies obviously separated from the original movies, it always seemed to much to think that Simmons would come back to the role. But for those who paid attention after the release of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 that introduced J. Jonah Jameson, fans hit the pavement to try and get Simmons back in the role. The great thing is, Simmons didn’t rule it out:

“I just heard we . . . that that’s a possibility.”

Oh how I’m crossing all my fingers for him to come back to the role, once we know what the deal is with The Amazing Spider-Man franchise that is.

Suicide Squad

Once David Ayer was brought on to direct Suicide Squad and the cast was assembled, Ayer has been taking to his personal Twitter account to tease the upcoming DC villain team-up movie. This time, posting a picture of some weaponry.

Which character’s weapons could it be? My bet is Deadshot, unless Deathstroke is confirmed to be in the movie then it’s definitely his. But for all the characters we know of, those are the two that fit the build of a big gun. Plus, look at that pretty cool looking gold scope… Deadshot.

Suicide Squad is in theaters on August 5th, 2016.

Neighbors 2

One of last year’s best comedies, with no surprise really, was Neighbors. From the guys who brought is Pineapple Express and This Is the End, it seemed like a no-brainer, right? Now that it’s had its success both at the box office ($250 million worldwide on a $18 million budget) and with critics, a sequel has now been announced.

Universal Studios slotted a R-rated comedy for May of 2016, and now we know that that movie is Neighbors 2. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are back as the writers, and Seth Rogen, Zac Efron, and Rose Byrne will all be back for the sequel.

Image of 'Neighbors'A small plot synopsis was release as well:

This time a sorority moves in next door to the couple, who enlist their former nemeses from the fraternity to help battle the raucous sisters.

Neighbors 2 will be released on May 13th, 2016.
