Neill Blomkamp is a man of sci-fi. His first full-length feature film was District 9, which tons of fans and experts thought was a revelation, one I personally disliked a little bit. His second was Elysium, which was a little less loved than District 9, but stayed in that same sci-fi realm. Now, he’s got Chappie, which has that same look and feel but in the world of artificial intelligence. As you can tell, I haven’t been the biggest fan of Blomkamp’s work, but this latest trailer for Chappie has me looking at what this movie really could be.
After being kidnapped by two criminals during birth, Chappie becomes the adopted son in a strange and dysfunctional family. Chappie is preternaturally gifted, one of a kind, a prodigy. He also happens to be a robot.
I was no way, shape or form interested in Chappie when the first trailer hit the web. I felt like the type of film it was described as and looked, the tone was completely off and just didn’t make me bite like I was hoping. The only reason I was somewhat interested in it was because of the cast Blomkamp was able to assemble.
Then this trailer came out this morning and I’ve got to say, it is much better. This is the trailer I was hoping for the first time around. It really opened up what this movie is about – it categorized the characters and where they fit, and the story is highlighted much more. Along with the really intriguing cast, this trailer sold me and I’m really looking forward to it now. Thank goodness because the sci-fi genre is my movie drug.
Chappie will open on March 6th, 2015. Directed by Neill Blomkamp starring Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver, Sharlto Cropley, Dev Patel, Jose Pablo Cantillo, and Miranda Frigon.
