The 24th entry in the James Bond franchise Spectre recently began its filming, and already there’s conversations among the studio on who should be the next Bond character. The inside scoop comes from none other than the Sony e-mail leaks which show Sony Pictures Co-Chairman Amy Pascal writing “Idris should be the next Bond.”
It’s a great casting choice in which I completely agree and so do a lot of other people. Almost any film site I go to will show film fans making a case to see the British actor play Bond. The man gives an excellent performance in anything he’s in, even the not so good films. It also helps that Idris Elba has major charisma onscreen, which is important if you’re playing James Bond. I could see this casting happening within the next few years for several reasons.
One, Idris Elba has expressed interest in playing the iconic British spy, 007. Earlier this year, he was asked a question on Reddit about possibly playing taking on the role in which he replied “Absolutely would love to play the character“. Second, the current James Bond himself, Daniel Craig has been wanting out for quite sometime. Here’s a quote from The Rolling Stones from Daniel Craig in 2012.
“I’ve been trying to get out of this from the very moment I got into it. But they won’t let me go, and I’ve agreed to do a couple more, but let’s see how this one does, because business is business and if [expletive] goes down, I’ve got a contract that somebody will happily wipe their [expletive] with.”
To be fair, maybe times have changed and the success of Skyfall has given him a change of heart. Also returning for the 24th Bond is Director Sam Mendes. Details on Spectre are limited, but as follows.
“A cryptic message from Bond’s past sends him on a trail to uncover a sinister organisation. While M battles political forces to keep the secret service alive, Bond peels back the layers of deceit to reveal the terrible truth behind Spectre.”
Here’s to hoping Idris Elba is our first African American 007, or did you have someone else in mind?
