With the success of the “young adult” genre in the past half-decade or so, we have seen a mixture of some horrible films (Twilight Series) and some very good-to-great films (The Hunger Games Series). So far I would call the Divergent Series the middle ground of the genre, without much to go off of since there has only been one movie released thus far. I was not a big fan of the first Divergent film, and that’s partially because it is not my demographic, but I also did not hate the movie either. I thought it set up a really interesting universe and it had some really good things going for it.
Regardless of my opinion though, it did surprisingly well at the box office pulling in over 280 million dollars worldwide on an 85 million dollar budget. Those numbers automatically gave the studio confidence to move forward with the series, which they would’ve done anyway unless Divergent bombed horrifically. The second installment in the franchise, Insurgent, will be released March 20, 2015 and the official trailer was recently released (see above).
I’ve got to say, while I think the concept of these movies are cheesy to begin with, I think this franchise can improve with each movie as it moves forward. Like I mentioned earlier, I think the first movie set up a cool world which they could expand on in future films and this trailer shows that they are going bigger, and hopefully better, with the sequel Insurgent. I’ve never read the novels, nor am I personally invested in this franchise so when I see the films or the trailers I’m basing it off of my uninformed opinion when it comes to the content. It looks like they are showing us a lot more action in this film rather than setting up the tone and the type of world they are in. One of my skepticisms of the first movie was that I did not think that Shailene Woodley’s character Tris was believable as a tough fighter that could hold her own in battle. This trailer changed my mind and I now take her character more seriously. You can sense that this character has been through a lot and she is ready take on any responsibilities that may lie ahead of her. Also, I like that all of the “Divergents” are joining together to fight against the government (not sure what the bad guys are called) lead by Kate Winslet’s character.
With that being said, just like the first movie, I thought this trailer was a little cheesy BUT I saw some really cool things in it that caught my interest and maybe have even convinced me to see it in theaters. Is that weird? Maybe I’ll take my younger cousin who is a huge fan of the books and movie so I’m not the only adult without a kid in the theater.
Check out the trailer for yourself and let me know what you guys think? Does it have any promise or has this franchise already lost you with the first movie? Express yourself in the comment section.
