2015: It’s an Exciting Time for Fans of Boxing Films

Early one morning I was tuning in to ESPN, and the network was discussing a possible Boxing match between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather. During that segment I started thinking about Boxing movies and realized there’s a handful coming our way soon. I did some research on upcoming boxing films and found four films that fans of film and boxing should be excited about. I’m a Boxing fan myself and I’m excited for what’s to come in the next 1-2 years.

1. Tyson Biopic

The announcement that an actual biopic about “The Baddest Man on the Planet” was finally happening was exciting to hear. For one, any sports fan whether its Football, Baseball, Hockey, or Nascar has heard of Iron Mike Tyson. He was the youngest heavyweight champion in the history of boxing and packed one the most powerful punches ever. He was also known for his bad behavior outside of the ring, which I’m sure this biopic will include. Second, the actor who will be playing Mike Tyson is Oscar winner Jamie Foxx. I remember watching an interview on Foxx a few years ago and he expressed how much he truly wanted to play the boxing legend. During the interview he even did Tyson’s persona including his famous lisp.

The biopic is in its early stages with no Director, Script, or Production Co. announced. However, I expect all that to change by mid next year considering the potential for a film telling Tyson’s story and having Jamie Foxx attached. My estimation is that filming on the biopic will begin as soon as Fall 2015.

(Update: Martin Scorsese is attached to direct the biopic.)

2. Southpaw

Jake-Gyllenhaal-Southpaw-Jacked

Southpaw is a fictional boxing drama starring Jake Gyllenhaal as Billy “The Great” Hope, a junior middleweight champion fighter who fights for redemption, while his life outside the ring is falling apart. The film is Directed by Antoine Fuqua who is coming off his latest hit film The Equalizer. There is plenty to be excited about just by looking at who is involved in the film. Jake Gyllenhaal is on fire right now with his Oscar buzz performance in this year’s Nightcrawler. He showed no less effort preparing for this role, having trained at Floyd Mayweather’s Atlanta Boxing Gym with professional boxers. This film also boasts a recognizable and talented cast in Forest Whitaker, Naomie Harris, Victor Ortiz, Rachael McAdams, and 50 Cent.

Southpaw is already in post production stages. The film is set to release July 24, 2015.

3. Hands of Stone

untitled (7)

Hands of Stone is labeled as a biographical action film that follows the boxing lives of Boxing legend Roberto Duran and his trainer Ray Arcel. The film is written and directed by Jonathan Jakubowicz, and co stars Robert DeNiro as the boxing legend’s trainer. What made me look twice about this film is that R&B Singer Usher Raymond will star as Boxing Legend Sugar Ray Leonard. That’s a casting that I find curious and want to see the end result. In June 1980, Roberto Duran defeated Sugar Ray Leonard to capture the WBC welterweight title, but shocked the boxing world by returning to his corner in the November rematch, saying ‘No Más’. Playing Roberto Duran is actor Edgar Ramirez who has starred in films such as The Counselor and Zero Dark Thirty.

Hands of Stone is currently in the post production stages and has an official release date for December 11, 2015.

4. Creed (Rocky Spin-Off)

Rocky Balboa ended the Rocky franchise on such a perfect note that there was no reason to ever bring the character back. However, this upcoming Rocky spin-off is a brilliant idea and most definitely needs to include the Rocky Balboa character. The film Creed focuses on the grandson of Rocky’s longtime rival and later good friend, Apollo Creed. Recognizing that Apollo’s grandson Adonis Creed, played by (Michael B. Jordan) has incredible talent for boxing, Rocky takes him under his wing as his trainer. Directing this film is Ryan Coogler who worked with Michael B. Jordan on last year’s Fruitvale Station.

For any fans of the Rocky films, I don’t know how you can’t be excited about this film, especially seeing Sylvester Stallone in a trainer’s role. I’m looking forward to seeing the relationship between Adonis Creed and Rocky Balboa, considering Rocky could have saved Apollo’s life if he had thrown in the towel in the fight against the Russian (Rocky IV). Also starring in Creed is actress Tessa Thompson and real life boxers Tony Bellew and Andre Ward.

Creed is set to begin production in Philadelphia on February of 2015, with a Thanksgiving 2015 release.

Which film are you most looking forward to see?

  1. I am really excited about Verdi Productions and writer and director Ben Younger’s movie “Bleed For This” which is the story of Vinny Paz and his lionhearted comeback from a near tragic car crash to Champion of the World.
