The First Character Names for 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Have Been Revealed!

There was no way that Disney, Lucasfilm, and J.J. Abrams were going to let us finish 2014 without anything on the new Star Wars. With the first teaser trailer released only weeks ago, we figured that was it on the Star Wars front until sometime in the beginning of next year. Luckily for us, they have decided to treat us with more on The Force Awakens, this time revealing the character names from that first trailer, and in a very cool way!

Normally, trailer screenshots wouldn’t be that big of a deal, but these are much different. Entertainment Weekly debuted the images, and debuted them in style as this is easily the coolest way possible – Topps trading card style that reveal the official names of the Star Wars: The Force Awakens characters!

  • John Boyega is Finn
  • The ‘ball droid’ is BB-8
  • Daisy Ridley is Rey
  • Oscar Isaac is Poe Dameron
  • The Sith is Kylo Ren

Here are the images:

These names are awesome! Finn is the most realistic, but so is the name Luke. BB-8 isn’t as catchy as R2D2, but get used to it as that name will be rolling off your tongue just like R2D2 has been for the last forty years. Rey for Daisy Ridley’s character is my favorite by far, it’s simple but very unique at the same time, just like Leia.

Oscar Isaac’s is the more interesting one, why is he the only one with a last name? Could that mean something or am I just thinking to far? And then there’s The Sith, Kylo Ren! Two things: first, bad freaking ass, awesome (speculated) bad guy name. And two, this name does pretty much guarantee that the dude wielding that saber isn’t a Sith from any canon or expanded universe stories, he’s a newbie. But, that doesn’t mean he can’t be based off of a Sith character from those stories.

Another thing that should be noted are the numbers placed on the cards. They are ranged from 11 to 96, and since these came out, there have been many speculations. The most common one is order of appearance in the movie, but would John Boyega’s character really show up after Oscar Isaac’s? Probably not.

Quite honestly, I’m still processing these names because these are the names that we will be watching, hearing, and living with for the rest of our lives as Star Wars fans. Can Finn be as iconic as Han? BB-8 as R2D2? Rey as Leia? Poe as Han? How about Kylo Ren as iconic as Darth Vader? Only time will tell, but each second thinking about that possibility gets me insanely excited. I can’t wait to hear how these names were chosen and hear them spoken in the movies. But don’t forget that there are tons of other names still yet to be announced, including the characters played by Andy Serkis, Adam Driver (if not above), Domhnall Gleeson (if not above), Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie, Peter Mayhew, and Max von Sydow.

It’s so damn exciting!
