Over the past few months studios with comic book owned properties have been circling the idea of films with villains in a central role. Sony’s Sinister Six and Warner Bros Suicide Squad have announced plans for a film, while Marvel’s Loki solo film was only heavily rumored. A comic book movie focused on villains will surely take the genre in a new direction, and it looks like DC’s Suicide Squad is near ready to break into that territory.
The Hollywood Reporter is claiming that Warner Bros has set their pre-production for February at the Toronto Pinewood Studios, with the principal photography taking place from April – September 2015. This shows that Warner Bros has enough confidence in Director David Ayer (Fury) to put together and prep the right (star studded) cast in a matter of months for his “Dirty Dozen w/ villains” labeled film.
In regards to casting, while we have heard a handful of names with heavy talent being rumored it appears that Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, and Tom Hardy are the favored for roles. We have heard reports that Margot Robbie has landed the part for Harley Quinn, while Jared Leto is being eyed for The Joker, and Tom Hardy for Deadshot. None of these castings have yet to be confirmed, but the recent response of Jared Leto being sworn to secrecy means that something is definitely happening in regards to him playing The Joker.
I’m pulling for Jared Leto as The Joker. I believe the recent Oscar winner has incredible acting talent and can handle the pressure of giving his own take on the character following Heath Ledger’s Oscar winning performance. This Joker character will be opposite Ben Affleck’s Batman at some point in this DC Cinematic Universe, and the onscreen combo of Affleck and Leto has limitless potential.
Margot Robbie will be a fine addition (literally) as Harley Quinn. Though her acting sample size is small with The Wolf of Wall Street, it was still a great performance opposite Leonardo DiCaprio. Margot’s latest film Focus starring Will Smith is looking really good. As for Tom Hardy, I’m hoping the writers give Deadshot a strong presence to remain an important character in the growing universe.
Several other big names like Will Smith and Jai Courtney are still being mentioned for potential roles, though unlikely. I expect casting announcements for the David Ayer directed Suicide Squad will be made in the coming weeks. Till then we’ll keep you posted.
Suicide Squad is set to release in theaters on August 5, 2016.
