Toy Story debuted in 1995 during my childhood, so when Toy Story 3 came out in 2010 many young adults (myself included) felt a sense of nostalgia , because we a kids loved these films and the characters that Pixar brought to life. What made Toy Story 3 so great is that it perfectly gave closure to Andy, Woody, and Buzz (something I was previously worried about when Toy Story 3 was announced). Now Pixar is looking to continue on that success with an official announcement from Disney CEO Bob Iger for Toy Story 4 coming in 2017.
This news makes me both happy and nervous at the same time. I’m happy because of the name John Lasseter, who is directing Toy Story 4. Lasseter directed the first two Toy Story films, which were both incredible films. I’m also happy because we’re simply getting more Toy Story, and those of us who enjoyed these films as children can now take our own children. What better joy is there than seeing your own child enjoy what you enjoyed at their age?
You sure you know what you’re doing Pixar?
What makes me so nervous about Toy Story 4 is that the previous installment was such a perfect ending. Now that Andy is off to college, where do you go from there? Will the next child that owns Woody and Buzz have as meaningful of a bond as the toys did with Andy? And will the audience feel it? Of course Lasseter himself briefly addressed where the story will go…
“We love these characters so much; they are like family to us. We don’t want to do anything with them unless it lives up to or surpasses what’s gone before. ‘Toy Story 3’ ended Woody and Buzz’s story with Andy so perfectly that for a long time, we never even talked about doing another ‘Toy Story’ movie. But when Andrew, Pete, Lee and I came up with this new idea, I just could not stop thinking about it. It was so to me, I knew we had to make this movie—and I wanted to direct it myself.”
I’m gonna go ahead and give Disney/Pixar the benefit for Toy Story 4. The studio’s previous sequels such as Cars 2 (Directed by Lasseter) and Monsters University were okay and good. Tom Hanks and Tim Allen are expected to return. Toy Story 4 will be one of many to come sequels from Pixar, including Cars 3 (ugh), Finding Dory (2015), and The Incredibles 2 (Finally!).
