Marvel Studios is “very close” to signing Benedict Cumberbatch for Dr. Strange role

The search for the right actor to play Marvel’s Doctor Strange character hit a speed bump when recently actor Joaquin Phoenix dropped out of negotiations. Since that time the list of actors rumored to play the neurosurgeon turned Sorcerer Supreme includes Ewan McGregor, Ryan Gosling, Matthew McConaughey, Ethan Hawke, Jared Leto and Jake Gyllenhaal. Now it seems there is a clear cut front runner for the role in Benedict Cumberbatch.

Cumberbatch’s name has been in the discussion since the beginning when Director Scott Derrickson confirmed (Twitter) that he will direct Doctor Strange. Since then Cumberbatch’s name got overshadowed when Jared Leto and Joaquin Phoenix entered the picture. Deadline and Variety who both reported this news seem confident that the role is Cumberbatch’s. According to reports, the actor is also Marvel’s favorite for the role.

Keep in mind though that Joaquin Phoenix was reportedly in final negotiations for the role, but that ultimately fell through. I’m personally pulling for Cumberbatch to get the role as I’m sure a majority of Marvel fans are as well.

Though it may seem like Marvel is running low on time to make their casting announcements for what is expected to be a 2016 release date for the film… this is still Marvel Studios. For all we know, Benedict Cumberbatch signed on to play Doctor Strange two weeks ago! I guess we’ll know soon enough from Marvel Studios themselves.

How do you feel about Cumberbatch joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Do you prefer someone else who was rumored to play the superhero?
